Weebly is a great solution to build professional websites using a simply drag and drop interface. With all of the amazing features that Weebly has, there are still a few downfalls. One of the main downfalls, is the limited ability to make necessary tweaks to hosting and website speed.

There are two basic types of optimization for your Weebly website that you should focus on

Also optimization becomes difficult, because there is little you can do to tweak load time factors that have to do with your Weebly hosting.

The workaround I have found is to include your Weebly website into a content delivery network, or CDN for short. Content delivery networks make your website load faster by caching your website on their servers. This allows the CDN to more efficiently deliver your websites data and in-turn gives you a quicker load time. Again this is kind of a tricky little work around and I have not tried it with a domain that is registered with Weebly, but I will and I will report my findings here when I do.

What I did to make this work is

  1. I purchased a domain name from BlueHost. This gives you better control over your DNS options for your domain.
  2. I then used Weebly’s domain transfer tool to set my new domain as the default for my Weebly website.
  3. I then followed all of the on page optimization procedures that we already discussed and constructed the website.
  4. Next, I signed up for a CloudFlare free account, just for starters and went through the set up instructions provided by Cloud Flare.
  5. Activated desired features in Cloud Flare and after about 7 days I started to see better load times. Down from 20-10 seconds total load time to 15-5 seconds total load time.
To update name servers if your domain register is  Weebly. Simply click domains scroll through the options and update the necessary name servers.

What’s CloudFlare?

Cloud Flare is a CDN that as I described earlier stores your website and delivers it in a more efficient manner. Cloud Flare also offers great security features for any website. If you are interested in Cloud Flare for your website, I suggest getting started with their free account and if you have a need for their more advanced options you could upgrade to a better plan.

#1 Sign up with CloudFlare

#2 Add domain

Login to CloudFlare and click + Add Site (top right). Enter your domain, click Begin Scan and wait about a minute, during which time it should look like this:

Cloudflare will compile your website’s DNS records. Once completed, you will need to verify that the records in Cloudflare match the records with your registrar.

Once all of the records are correct (clouds are orange), click the green Continue button and choose the free plan (and perhaps marvel at the starting price of the Enterprise plan).

Next you will be instructed to change your domain’s name servers. You’ll need to go back to your domain’s registrar and update the DNS with the ones provided by CloudFlare.

Weebly does not offer the feature to display phone number, social icons and search box in the website’s header area. Most of the Weebly themes do not support this option either.

Displaying social icons is definitely a good idea for better user experience. The thing is it’s only can be added within Weebly interface when you have a paid subscription. Here, we’re going to explain how to add it anyway even for free users.

Though search box is only applicable for pro users. When you choose any of the new themes and navigate to “Theme” section in the top of your Weebly Site Editor you will not see an option to enable or disable these elements in the header.

Though there are some other alternatives such as adding custom elements like Google custom search box etc, it’s actually quite easy and fast to display default Weebly header elements by modifying source HTML/CSS.

In this article, we’re going to show you how to add a free Weebly Forum to your website. With a lot of cases when it comes to forums it’s a very complicated process but fortunately with Weebly, it’s quite easy to add.



Weebly Forum Feature

Weebly had once a per default third party embed-able feature that automatically allows its users to add forums. It was powered by Tal.ki forums and could be embedded from within a Weebly element. The feature has been unfortunately disconnected. Since then, the two only options for Weebly users are either to find an embed-able forum or to look for a Weebly App that allows them to add forums.

How to Add a Free Forum to your Weebly Website

Option #1 — Embed a Third Party Forum in your Weebly Website

For this, we’re going to use Nabble Forums. Nabble is a forum that can be enabled in any Weebly website. Here is a step by step tutorial on how to embed Nabble forum in Weebly site.

To get started, the first thing you’re going to do is to add a new standard page with no header as a layout to host your forums. Here’s how to add pages in Weebly. Once done, Go to Nabble.com and click on the link “Create a Free Forum” button  in order to create a free Nabble forum.

You’ll need then to fill two sections – one is for your account details at Nabble and the other is for the details about your forum. Once you filled everything, go ahead and click on the “Create Forum” button.

You’ll be redirected to your Nabble forum page. In order to perform any kind of changes to your forum, you’d first need to confirm the email sent to you. The permanent Nabble link for your forum will also be sent with the activation email.

You can also login to your forum using the link received in your welcome email. Well, now to add your forum to your Weebly website, log in to your forum and then select the “Embedding options” under options menu.

Embed Forums to Weebly

Copy the Javascript code displayed. We’re going to insert this into your Weebly website ti embed the forum you just created.

In  order to have the forum displayed in your Weebly website, you’ll need to login to your Weebly website editor, and embed the javascript code into a standard page. Here’s how to embed Javascript code in Weebly.

Publish your Weebly website and now you are all set! :)

Option #2 — Embed a Forum in your Website using a Weebly App

Weebly themes must be provided as a .ZIP file. Styles must live in main_style.css or main.less (if using LESS). Make sure you’ve included all images and other assets. Well, importing a Weebly theme is mostly needed when you buy a theme from third parties. The import option is available under “Design > Change Themes > Import Theme”. More detailed instructions below:

​To import a Weebly theme:

  1. Open your test site. In the Weebly editor, click the Design tab.
  2. Click Change Theme, and at the bottom, click Import Theme.
To apply your theme to your site, go to Design > Change Theme, click Custom Themes, and click Choose to apply it, or Edit to edit the theme.
